I was watching the local news in the 1980s and saw something I will never forget. On the screen, the Scooby Team Scooby Doo shirt was showing a man making a fool of himself at a Shriner’s parade doing inept magic tricks. He was trying to be cute and funny but he looked like a buffoon. He was terrible and while the announcer talked it was embarrassing just watching him as people booed and threw pennies at him, which he ran around picking up. The Davy Crockett weapon was a selectable yield, nuclear recoilless rifle, firing its 10 or 20 ton yield W54 nuclear warhead up to 4 km, but the radiation from the weapon would almost certainly irradiate the firing crew. It was tested at least once, shown here before being fired at the Yuma Test Site outside of Yuma, Arizona. The weapon was deployed during the Cold War but was never used. Contrary to popular belief, it wasn’t safety concerns that caused it to be withdrawn from service, it was personnel training costs and the fear that some sergeant would go crazy and start World War 3. The practice rounds for this weapon contain depleted uranium (that is, U-238 with all of the more radioactive U-235 removed), and that practice ranges were contaminated with U-238 as a result. Most diamonds are black. They’re carbon, after all. Those dirty, impure diamonds usually end up in industrial applications, ground up, and used in cutting tools. You can find natural black diamonds online for about $20 per carat. My wife and I were on a Royal Caribbean cruise out of Boston in October 2005. It was a 10 day cruise to the Southern Caribbean, and on longer (>7 days) cruises during the school year you get a pretty old crowd. My wife and I, in our 20s and 30s respectively, were among the youngest passengers on the ship. On our last day before returning to Boston, we were on the pool deck in teh late afternoon for a last bit of sun. An older man (must have been late 70s minimum, maybe older) decided he didn’t need to go to his room to change and removed his bathing suit in front of us and the (somewhat sparse) crowd at the pool. He then got dressed into shorts and a shirt. He just ignored everyone around him, and they (we) diligently ignored him. I don’t think alcohol was involved – the guy was either having a senior moment or just didn’t care what anyone else thought.
